HSBC Shuts Down U.S. Business Banking to Refocus on Asia and Middle East

HSBC is closing its U.S. business banking division, impacting about 4,500 clients, as part of its ongoing strategy to simplify operations and strengthen focus on Asia and the Middle East. The UK-based bank will support affected customers during the transition and retain select mid-market and global clients. This move follows HSBC’s earlier exits from U.S. retail banking and M&A operations in the Americas and Europe, along with its $13.5B sale of its Canadian business in 2022, underscoring a broader push to boost profitability through regional consolidation.

President Trump’s renewed push to impose sweeping tariffs has sparked legal challenges and economic uncertainty. Using emergency powers under the IEEPA, Trump declared trade deficits and border issues as national emergencies to justify tariffs on countries like China, Canada, and Mexico. However, a federal court recently blocked these tariffs, ruling he exceeded his authority—though the government is appealing. Trump may still levy tariffs under older trade laws, but these require investigations or have strict limits. As courts weigh their legality, tariff revenues—potentially up to $60 billion—hang in the balance, impacting businesses, consumers, and U.S. trade policy.

Haribo Recalls Candy in Netherlands After Cannabis Contamination Shocks Consumers

Haribo has recalled specific one-kilo bags of its Happy Cola F!ZZ candy in the Netherlands after cannabis was found in several packages, prompting illness in children and adults. Dutch authorities launched an investigation after reports of consumers falling ill, confirming traces of cannabis in some samples. Haribo is urging consumers not to eat products with a best-before date of January 2026, though only three contaminated bags have been identified so far. The recall is limited to the Netherlands, and products in other countries remain unaffected. Dutch police are investigating how the contamination occurred.
